Fellow Marines and family members of the late Gunnery Sgt. Gustavo Aleman, former administrative chief at the Recruit Administration Branch here, gathered at Martini Hall Monday for a presentation of education bonds to his children.

Aleman was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in Iraq in 2005, and died Aug. 2, after a two-year struggle with the disease.

The Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation has a mission of encouraging spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical development through education. The foundation granted Daniel, 6, and Gabriel, nine-months-old, two $30,000 bonds to help fund their college education when they turn 18.

“We present bonds to all children of Marines and federal law enforcement employees who were killed in the line of duty,” said Eric Torykian, vice president of MCLEF. “It’s our way of saying thank you for those who paid the ultimate price in the defense of our country.”

The executive officer of Receiving Company, Capt. Shaun Thomson, submitted an application to MCLEF in order for Aleman’s family to receive the bonds.

“The outpouring of support for Gunny Aleman and his family was tremendous,” said Thomson. “Although he was out at the hospital a lot due to his medical condition, everyone knew him and respected him.”

Rosario Aleman, Gustavo’s widow, said although the bonds will not bring her husband back, she is thankful that MCLEF was there to lend a helping hand. With the task of raising her children on her own, Rosario said she is glad that she has a helping hand in funding their education.
