MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO -- Headquarters and Service Battalion won the Commanding General’s Cup billiards tournament at the depot recreation center Tuesday.
More than 40 players showed up for the tournament, which made for good competition between the pool sharks.
The number of players dwindled toward the championship match. Playing the best two of three games, the intensity jumped when Lance Cpl. Ryan K. McKinney swept the double-elimination tournament to play Marine Corps Community Service’s George Saubon.
"There was a lot of stiff competition this year, which made for an exciting tournament. I can’t wait to come out again next year," said McKinney. "I have basically been playing pool since I could see over the table."
McKinney won the first of the three games against Saubon. Yet, Saubon, not to be outplayed, won the second.
In the final game of the trilogy, Saubon missed the last three last balls, which were returned by McKinney for the win.
In the match for third place, Al Major of MCCS beat John Lowery, who is also from MCCS, in the first two games. Reigning champion, Cpl. Brent E. Stevenson, H&S Bn., was not as focused as last year and was eliminated early in the competition.
"There were 30 competitors last year and this year we had 44," said Rachel Dickinson. "We plan to have more billiards tournaments as the competition grows."
