Children from around the San Diego area gathered aboard the depot July 30 to Aug. 2 for a chance to make new friends.

Camp Wanakura, sponsored by the American Diabetes Assosiation, gives children a chance to meet and greet new friends that share a common factor in life, diabetes.

The campers range from five to 12 years old.  For 13 years, the camp has helped ensure children know they are not alone.

"The camp is designed to help the children enjoy everyday life," said Gayle Lorenzi, camp adult staff.  "It allows them to get to know others with diabetes and makes them aware that they aren't alone."

One camper shares his personal opinion of the camp and how it has helped him overcome some of his fears.

"Being with others that have diabetes makes me feel comfortable with other people," said Justin L. Brady, 9-year-old camper.

"It's a lot of fun.  I'll probably continue coming and may even return as an aide," said Brady.

Children who attend the camp enjoy the experience so much they return year after year and some even return as teen aides.

"One of the best things about the program is seeing campers that started at age six coming back as aides, 13 to 15 years old," said Frances D. Styles, camp adult staff.  "It's rewarding to watch them mature and grow."

Some of the children may take a little longer than most to mature though, to include one who has returned to help as an aide.

One of the boys who came at a younger age kept us on our toes when he was here for the camp, said Styles.

"Now he is back as an aide," added Styles.

Volunteers, parents and health care providers assist with the camp and ensure the children have a good time while ensuring it remains safe for the kids.
