ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Marine Corps' advertising team recently received accolades from the advertising industry for excellence in advertising. The Marine Corps' marketing partner, J. Walter Thompson, picked up three awards in the Southeast regional competition of the 2003 ADDY Awards.
The team received a Gold ADDY for the revised website Marines.com, a Silver ADDY for "The Few" book, and a Bronze ADDY for the public service announcement "Origins."
"The Marine Corps and J. Walter Thompson have a long standing tradition of producing quality work," said Maj. Andrew Fortunato, Assistant Chief of Staff, Marketing and Public Affairs, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. "This is the latest in a string of awards running back through our half a century of working together."
The ADDY Awards are one of the nation's largest advertising competitions. Winners compete through local and regional level competitions before moving on to the national finals. This year's national winners will be announced at the 2003 ADDY Awards in Los Angeles on June 7.
"This advertising industry recognition is a tribute to the hard work and collaboration that goes into all of the Marine Corps' work," said Jay Cronin, J. Walter Thompson. "Congratulations go to all of the Marines that drove and contributed to these projects."
The website, Marines.com, is used by the Marine Corps to inform the public and generate leads to potential applicants. It went through a redesign last fall and now features a modern look with sound, video and animation. The website also provides improved information tailored towards parents and educators who may influence a potential recruit.
One of the many ways that the Marine Corps reaches out to potential applicants is through collateral materials. "The Few" book is one such item available to a recruiter when educating a young man or woman about the Marine Corps. Through informative and eye-catching graphics, "The Few" gives prospects a glimpse of recruit training and their future as a Marine.
As part of the Marine Corps' television Public Service Announcement campaign, "Origins" debuted last year in support of Marine Corps Bands. The PSA campaign features imagery tying the heritage of military bands in battle with the service they perform today. The PSA is used to publicize Marine Corps Bands' and "The Commandant's Own" Marine Drum and Bugle Corps' concerts in communities around the nation.
