Marines shoot in four-man teams during the 3rd annual Montford Point Biathlon at Camp Barrett, Quantico, Va., Oct. 30, 2015. The competitors in this year’s biathlon ran from The Basic School to Range Three, where they fired from the 200 yard-line in the prone and standing positions with 20 rounds of ammunition, then ran back to TBS. The event commemorates Montford Point Marines, African Americans recruited into the Marine Corps from 1942 through 1949. At that time African Americans did not attend boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., or MCRD San Diego, Calif. Instead, African American Marines were segregated, experiencing basic training at Montford Point in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Approximately 20,000 Marines went through basic training at Montford Point.
