Marine Band San Diego's jazz combo performs during a concert for Central Washington University students in Ellensburg, Washington, Feb. 17, 2015. Following an intensive audition and screening process, Marine Band applicants attend recruit training and Marine Combat Training. Next, they attend a six-month basic music course at the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, where they study theory, ear training, private instrumental lessons, ensemble instruction and marching techniques. When their initial training is complete, they are assigned to one of 12 field bands in the continental U.S., Hawaii or Japan.
