James C. Phillips, an Iwo Jima veteran, is honored by cadets and students at G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School in Miami, Fla., Jan. 18, 2012. “Jack,” as his friends call him – his father’s name – was recognized for his service in World War II as a machine gunner with the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. The school’s Junior Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps painted a mural of the iconic flag raising on Mount Suribachi as a testament to Phillips and all veterans.
