Master Gunnery Sergeant Ross Spear currently serves as the Recruiting and Retention School Chief Instructor. Master Gunnery Sergeant Spear is a Newton, Massachusetts-native. He enlisted on Aug. 14, 2000, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. In December 2000, Private First Class Spear reported to Camp Geiger, North Carolina for the School of Infantry Training.
Private First Class Spear reported to 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines, Camp Lejeune in March of 2001. While serving in 3rd Bn 2nd Mar, LCpl Spear was deployed to Okinawa Japan, as part of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) from December 2001 to June 2002.
In January 2003 LCpl Spear was deployed to Iraq as a part of Task Force Tarawa. In April 2003 while deployed in Iraq, LCpl Spear was promoted to Corporal. In June 2003 LCpl Spear participated in Operation Shining Express off the coast of Liberia.
In August 2004, Corporal Spear reported to Basic Recruiters School San Diego, California. While serving in a student capacity, Corporal Spear was promoted to Sergeant in September 2004. Upon graduating, he was assigned to Recruiting Station Springfield where he served as a canvasing recruiter. While there, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in February 2006.
In April 2007 SSgt Spear was selected to become the SNCOIC of Recruiting Sub Station Hartford, CT. While serving as a SNCOIC. While serving as a SNCOIC, SSgt Spear was selected and approved to become an 8412.
In March 2010 SSgt Spear selected to become the RS Operations Chief of RS Springfield, MA. In March 2010 SSgt Spear was also promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.
In March 2011 GySgt Spear was selected to become the Assistant Recruiting Instructor of RS Springfield.
In October 2011 GySgt Spear reported to Recruiters School San Diego, CA as a Basic Recruiters Course (BRC) instructor. In January 2013, while serving as a BRC instructor, GySgt Spear was selected by the Command to be the Career Recruiter Course (CRC) instructor. In June 2014 GySgt Spear was assigned to be the CRC Course Chief.
In June 2015 GySgt Spear reported to 1st Marine Corps District to be a member of the Training Team. In Aug 2015 GySgt Spear was promoted to MSgt.
In June 2017 MSgt Spear reported to RS Springfield as the Recruiter Instructor (RI). From Nov 2018 to May 2019 MSgt Spear also covered down as the RI of RS Boston.
In July 2020 MSgt Spear reported to RS New Jersey to be the Recruiting Instructor. In September of 2020 MSgt Spear was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant.
In June 2022 MGySgt Spear reported to the 4th Marine Corps District as the District Training Team Chief.
In April 2025, Master Gunnery Sergeant Spear assumed the duties of Recruiting and Retention School Chief Instructor.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Spear's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award and various other service and campaign medals.
