Private First Class Aldrich C. Servilla, Echo Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, provides security during the Crucible at Edson Range, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Oct. 20. Servilla will be a Reserve Marine and plans to go back to college in San Francisco to earn his master’s degree in business administration. After completing his MBA, he plans to take on yet another challenge by applying for Officer Candidate School to become an officer in the Marine Corps. Today, all males recruited west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Marines shoot in four-man teams during the 3rd annual Montford Point Biathlon at Camp Barrett, Quantico, Va., Oct. 30, 2015. The competitors in this year’s biathlon ran from The Basic School to Range Three, where they fired from the 200 yard-line in the prone and standing positions with 20 rounds of ammunition, then ran back to TBS. The event commemorates Montford Point Marines, African Americans recruited into the Marine Corps from 1942 through 1949. At that time African Americans did not attend boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., or MCRD San Diego, Calif. Instead, African American Marines were segregated, experiencing basic training at Montford Point in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Approximately 20,000 Marines went through basic training at Montford Point.
