Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego -- The 12th Marine Corps District Family Readiness Office is scheduled to hold the 1st 12th MCD Teen Summit June 20 to 21, 2014, at the 12th MCD headquarters aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. The free seminar hosts classes designed to promote parent to teen communication and allows teenagers to network with others within the 12th District.
Young adults age 15 through 17 are eligible to attend the summit, along with one accompanying parent.
Along with a kayak and bowling trip, the conference includes classes aimed at educating teenagers for future success. Classes include College 101, scholarship briefs, Suicide Prevention and Drug and Alcohol Prevention – aimed at promoting the relationship between a teenager and their parent.
“Opening up dialogue is one of the key things we are trying to do,” said Maria RodriguezCallejas, Marine Corps Family Team Building Trainer at the 12th District. “It will allow the parent to see what the teenager may be going through, open up some communication, and allow the teenager to see the parent is interested in what’s going on in their lives as well.”
RodriguezCallejas says another key aspect of the summit is allowing the teenagers to network with others their age.
“Other kids in their schools may not be able to relate to the fact that one of their parents is a Marine,” said RodriguezCallejas. “Here they will get the opportunity to connect with teenagers who live the same military lifestyle.”
At the end of the summit, teenagers will be declared as teen ambassadors, allowing them to take what they learned back to their peers within the Marine Corps community.
“It’s a great opportunity for a teenager and a parent to spend time together,” said RodriguezCallejas. “It’s a great way to bond and grow their relationship over an uninterrupted weekend of activities.”
