SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Haven A. Primm, a high school student from San Antonio, Texas, was selected to attend the Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy held aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy, or SLCDA, is a week-long academy led by United States Marine Corps leaders that will take place July 16th through the 22nd, 2018.
The SLCDA aims to teach students how to be leaders while challenging them to make ethical choices and hone their leadership skills. Students will step outside their comfort zones to test their confidence and strengthen their decision-making abilities.
Primm, a Louis D. Brandeis High School rising senior, is one of the seven students from south Texas selected to attend the SLCDA. She is the daughter of Marcus and Shawanda Primm of San Antonio. Primm currently holds a 3.7 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and The African-American Interest Group. She applied for SLCDA early on in her junior year of high school in hopes of getting a coveted spot to attend the leadership academy.
“I trust that SLCDA will take my confidence to another level.” said Primm, “I will be able to actively participate in new experiences and to attain the qualities of a leader that will empower others during my last year of high school.”
While attending the academy, participants will learn about Marine Corps leadership skills, ethics, character development, teamwork and camaraderie. The academy curriculum is built around the three pillars of character, leadership and ethics, which are qualities Primm is looking forward to incorporating into her character.
“I believe that SLCDA will help my determination and character development.” said the Brandeis High School varsity track and field team member.
Primm plans to attend college with long-term goal of becoming a physical therapist.
