“In high school, I always felt like I wanted to help people, and I feel like I’m doing just that.” Lance Cpl. Tateyannia Coopenhaver found herself helping students from 12 high schools by grading drill during a high school JROTC competition at Boca Raton Community High School, in Boca Raton, Florida, Dec. 8. Coopenhaver is a graduate of Lake Worth High School and a native of West Palm Beach. She was recruited by Staff Sgt. Dwight Bunting of Marine Corps Recruiting Substation Del Ray Beach, Florida, where she is currently performing the temporary additional duty of recruiter’s assistant. Normally, she works as an administrative clerk at U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve, New Orleans. Less than two years ago, Coopenhaver shed approximately 20 pounds to meet the Marine Corps’ physical requirements to begin recruit training. The South Florida native said the process of earning the title of Marine has given her self-confidence to mentor others who are following in her footsteps.
