Team 12 takes the battle to the field

By | 12th Marine Corps District | September 23, 2003

12TH MARINE CORPS DISTRICT, Calif. -- After a quick rout of the Consolidated Personnel Administration Center bumping them to 3rd place, Team 12 went on to battle 3rd Recruit Training Battalion for 2nd place in the MCRD flag football season.
The district started the game against 3rd Battalion in a rut by allowing a touchdown early in the first quarter.
3rd Bn's. SSgt. Michael Pullum, made a stunning reception for a touchdown giving his team an early 6 - 0 lead, with the two-point conversion 3rd Bn's, lead was extended to 8-0.
The early lead did not discourage Team 12's Cpl. Raul Munoz.  His sack early in the first quarter gave Team 12 the momentum they needed to get back in the game.
The sack by Munoz put the ball back in Team 12's possession and after a series of short runs by quarterback GySgt. Francisco Rivera.  Team 12 was set up for their first touchdown.
Building on their momentum Rivera completed a short pass to MGySgt. Alton Black.
Following Rivera's completion to Black, Rivera rifled a pass to Capt. Christopher Person for Team 12's first touchdown.
Team 12 however could not convert the two-point conversion.  Rivera's pass attempt was intercepted, handing momentum back to 3rd Bn.
The interception led to a time consuming drive by 3rd Bn. However, following a backbreaking sack by SSgt. Ryan Duque the half ended with the score 8-6.
The second half started with a stalemate with both teams punting after going three and out.
Duque found weak spots in the 3rd Bn's. special teams and returned a punt 30 yards.  Duque's punt return glory was shot-lived following a turnover on downs.
A sack by Rivera forced 3rd Bn. to turnover on downs.  However, Team 12 was unable to capitalize, going four and out.
3rd Bn., however was able to take advantage of Team 12's inability to execute as they marched down field and scored on a touchdown reception by SSgt. Michael Barrett making the score 14-6.
Following the touchdown Team 12 again went three and out and was forced to punt. 3rd Bn., put the nail in the coffin as they rallied on this latest turnover and drove the length of the field for yet another touchdown.
In a last ditch effort to bring Team 12 back coach GySgt. Chuck Walters called for everyone to go long.  This resulted in the best drive of the game with Team 12 scoring one more touchdown before the game ended making the final score 22-12.
The loss put an end to Team 12's season. They finished second place in the league.
