On November 10th, Marines worldwide joined together to commemorate 230 years since the founding of the Corps. At Recruiting Station Albany, N.Y., the Corps’ extended family was invited to join the celebration.

Known in the recruiting world as a "Center of Influence" event, RS Albany hosted a birthday luncheon to communicate recruiting goals and messages to government leaders and community members who are in a position to enhance recruiter efforts.

The 60-person gathering at The State Room Banquet Hall was a mixed meeting of the minds that included members of the New York State Assembly, local councilmen, veterans group leaders, school officials and media organizations.

In keeping with the traditions of the day, the luncheon began with a viewing of the commandant’s message and a cake-cutting ceremony.  The ceremony, an observance not generally viewed by civilians, was included in the luncheon to thank those in attendance for all support provided over the past year.

“We incorporated the ceremony into the event to show our appreciation to these community members who take care of the Corps and our Marines in their hometowns,” said Capt. Michael E. Dwyer, executive officer of RS Albany. “It allows them to have a glimpse into our world of intangible qualities that we, as Marines, stress; pride, honor and tradition.”

As the cake was ceremoniously marched out of the room, servers with plates of grilled sirloin and Maryland crab-cakes entered. As everyone dined, the table conversation was indicative of how thrilled everyone found the luncheon thus far.

“I can’t thank you enough for inviting me to such a special engagement,” said John Saluppo, who drove from New Jersey to represent his company, MedVantage, at the luncheon. “As one of your vendors I am honored and privileged to be among the best of the best today.”

During coffee and cake, RS Albany’s commanding officer, Maj. Brian W. Neil, engaged the group with a 30-minute presentation about the current situation of "their" Marine Corps. From the current recruiting statistics to the Corps’ present status overseas, Neil ensured every guest understood the role and mission of the Marine Corps and the individual Marine.

The event concluded to a roar of applause from all attendees who energetically waved and said their goodbyes from the door.

“Congratulations to all Marines for 230 years of defending our country and thank you” said Saluppo as the door, closed behind him.
