Sgt. Maj. Larry D. Liechty enlisted in the Marine Corps March 1, 1992, from Fairfield, Calif. Upon completion of recruit training aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Calif., Sgt. Maj. Liechty attended the Motor Transportation Operators Course, Camp Pendleton, Calif., and was assigned the military occupational specialty of 3533 as a Logistic Vehicle System operator. Upon completion of school he was transferred to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif., where he served as a LVS operator and line noncommissioned officer.
In November 1994, Sgt. Maj. Liechty was reassigned to 3rd Transportation Support Battalion, Okinawa, Japan, where he served as a line chief. During this tour he completed multiple deployments to Korea. Sgt. Maj. Liechty was meritoriously promoted to corporal in June 1995.
In February 1996, Sgt. Maj. Liechty was assigned to 1st Landing Support Battalion, Camp Pendleton and received the MOS of 0431 as an embark specialist. While assigned to 1st LSB, Sgt. Maj. Liechty served as an embark NCO and later moved to the embarkation chief billet.
In January 1998 Sgt. Maj. Liechty was promoted to the rank of sergeant and requested orders to Drill Instructor School.
In October 1998, Sgt. Maj. Liechty graduated Drill Instructor School and was assigned to Company D where he served as a drill instructor and senior drill instructor. In Dec 1999 he was reassigned Support Battalion where he received the MOS of 8552 as a martial arts instructor-trainer.
In November 2001, Sgt. Maj. Liechty was reassigned to 1st Marine Air Wing, Marine Air Control Group 18, Okinawa, as the logistic chief and the Group martial arts instructor-trainer. From there he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
After his return from Iraq he was transferred to Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Bridgeport, Calif., as the logistic chief and company first sergeant. In November 2007 he received orders to 7th Communication Battalion as the first sergeant for Company B. He deployed numerous times on training operations and then requested to deploy to Afghanistan as an embedded trainer with Regional Corps Area Command 3-7. He was assigned to ETT 5-5 in the Loghman province, Afghanistan, for 10 months.
In August 2010 he was reassigned to Officer Candidates School, Quantico, Va., where he held the billets of Headquarters and Support Company first sergeant for over a year, as well as Training Company and Company C first sergeant. He was promoted to his current rank March 1, 2013, and transferred to his current billet as Recruiting Station San Francisco's sergeant major.
Sgt. Maj. Liechty’s decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4th award), and the Navy, Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5th award) and the Combat Action Ribbon (2nd award).
