Sergeant Major Dennis Nash, USMC
Sergeant Major Nash was born in Springfield, Oregon in January 1975. Upon graduation from Springfield High School in 1993, he reported to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, on 2 November 1993. Upon completion of recruit training, he reported to the School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, California. Graduating as a Rifleman in April 1994, SgtMaj Nash then reported to Marine Corps Security Forces School in Chesapeake, Virginia and graduated as a Security Guard.
On 2 June 1994, SgtMaj Nash transferred to Marine Corps Security Forces Company, Bangor, Washington, where he served as a Sentry, Team Leader, Corporal of the Guard, Squad Leader, and Sergeant of the Guard. Transferring in June of 1996 to 3rd Battalion 7th Marines, First Marine Division, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, 29 Palms, California, SgtMaj Nash served as a Team Leader in Company L before completing the indoctrination for acceptance into the Surveillance Target Acquisition Platoon (Sniper Platoon), where he served as a Scout and a Spotter. While there, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan in February 1997 until executing a humanitarian transfer back to Marine Corps Security Forces, Bangor, Washington.
During this assignment he served as a Section Leader, Safety Officer, Facilities Manager, and Company Gunnery Sergeant. In August of 2002, SgtMaj Nash transferred to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While there he served as a Mortar Section Leader, Weapons Platoon Sergeant, Line Platoon Sergeant, and a Line Platoon Commander in Company C. In March of 2003, SgtMaj Nash deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Joint Task Force Liberia. In June 2004, he deployed to the Al Anbar Province in Iraq and participated in Operation Al Fajr during the Battle of Fallujah and returned in January of 2005.
In April 2005, SgtMaj Nash reported to the Basic Recruiting Course, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Upon graduation, he transferred to Recruiting Station Portland Oregon. SgtMaj Nash served in the billets of Canvassing Recruiter and 2nd in Charge at Recruiting Sub-Station Beaverton, Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Recruiting Sub-Station Milwaukie (redesignated during his tour as Recruiting Sub-Station Oregon City), and MEPS Liaison at the Portland Military Entry Processing Station.
Upon completion of Recruiting Duty, SgtMaj Nash transferred to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, Fifth Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, and briefly served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant of Company G prior to being promoted to First Sergeant. In December of 2008, SgtMaj Nash transferred to 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, First Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as the Weapons Company First Sergeant and deployed with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS New Orleans (LPD-18) as part of the BOXER Amphibious Ready Group from January to July 2009, and deployed again with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Green Bay (LPD-20) from February to September 2011. Upon returning from the second deployment, SgtMaj Nash was then assigned as the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant from November 2011 to July 2012.
In August of 2012, SgtMaj Nash reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia and served as the Company First Sergeant for Tenant Activities Company until his promotion to SgtMaj in February of 2014.
Upon his promotion, SgtMaj Nash then transferred to his current assignment as RS Sergeant Major of Recruiting Station Portland Oregon, 12th Marine Corps Recruiting District.
Sergeant Major Nash is married to the former Erica Knill and has four children: Brittany, 22; Kaylee, 16; Annabelle, 12; and Cheyenne, 10. His personal decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat V, the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of 2nd award, the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 gold stars in lieu of 4th award, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with silver star in lieu of 6th award.
