Sergeant Major Sweeney graduated from Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego in April of 1989. Following recruit training; he attended SOI at Camp Pendleton, California where he was assigned the MOS 0352, Anti-Tank Assaultman.
He reported to 7th Marines TOW platoon where he served as a TOW gunner. During his assignment to 7th Marines he served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
In August 1991, he transferred to 9th Marines on Okinawa and was promoted to Corporal in December of 1991. He reported to 1st Battalion 8th Marines in September of 1992 and was promoted to Sergeant in February of 1993. After transferring to 2nd Battalion 8th Marines in December of 1994, he received orders to MCRD San Diego, where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor from 1995 to 1997.
He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in July of 1997. He reported to 3rd Battalion 5th Marines in July of 1997 and served as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant and Weapons Platoon Sergeant. He transferred to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute NROTC department in June 1999 as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor.
During the summers of 2000 and 2001, he performed the duties of Sergeant Instructor at Officer Candidates School, Quantico, Virginia.
In November 2001, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant. He was then transferred to 2nd Battalion 8th Marines, where he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and Company First Sergeant for G Company. During this tour, he participated in combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom Afghanistan and the 24th MEU.
He was promoted to his First Sergeant in October 2005. In January 2006, he transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina where he served as the Company First Sergeant, Lima and Quebec companies third recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment.
In July of 2008 he was selected to attend the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy in Ft Bliss Texas, where he was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major. Upon graduating the Academy he received orders to HMLA-269 in New River, NC.
In May of 2012 Sergeant Major Sweeney received orders to 4th Marine Corps District, Recruiting Station Frederick to take over as the RS Sergeant Major.
His personal awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars and one combat “V”, the Navy Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon with two gold stars.
