Sergeant Major Shaffer was born on 8 June 1976 in Akron, Ohio. He moved to Altoona, Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Marine Corps on 18 November 1997. He attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina and was promoted to Private First Class. Sergeant Major Shaffer reported to the School of Infantry on Camp Geiger, North Carolina for Marine Combat Training. In March 1998 completed Marine Combat Training and reported to Camp Johnson, North Carolina for Basic Warehousing School and was assigned the MOS of 3051 Warehouse clerk.
In April 1998, he reported to 2d Supply Battalion, 2d Supply Company for duty as a warehouse clerk. In May 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and attended Cpl’s Course. In November 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and attended Sgt’s Course. After Sgt’s Course he reported to Recruiting School and upon completion he was assigned to Recruiting Station Charleston, West Virginia, Recruiting Sub-Station Xenia, Ohio as a Canvassing Recruiter. In 2004 he finished 2nd for Recruiter of the year for RS Charleston. In January 2005, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant.
In June 2006, he reported to Marine Air Control Group 28, Marine Tactical Air Control Squadron 28 (MTACS-28), where he held billets of Supply Officer, Supply Chief, Warehouse Chief and Equal Opportunity Representative. In April 2007, he attended the Supply Chief’s Course and Career Course in July of 2007. Then he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with MTACS-28 in July 2007 and again in January 2009. While deployed to Iraq he served as the Supply Officer, Supply Chief, and Warehouse Chief for MTACS-28 forward.
In May 2010, he reported to 3d Supply Battalion, 3d Supply Company, Okinawa, Japan. He was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in August 2010. He attended Advanced Course in August 2010. While assigned to 3d Supply Battalion he held the billets of Warehouse Chief and Company Gunnery Sergeant. While in Okinawa he was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion to serve as the Operations Chief and Guard Chief for Camp Kinser. In May 2013, he was assigned to Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group in Virginia Beach, Virginia as a Coordination Liaison Assessment Training Team member. While assigned to Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group he attended the Defense Language Institute on Dam Neck to study Modern Standard Arabic.
In September 2014, he was promoted to First Sergeant and assigned to 8th Communication Battalion and served in Company C and Company A. In March 2015, he attended the Senior Enlisted Primary Military Education Course in Quantico, Virginia. While assigned to 8th Communication Battalion, in February 2016 he deployed to Norway in support of Operation Cold Response.
In April 2017, he reported to Air Control Training Squadron, Twentynine Palms, California to serve as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
In June 2018, he was transferred to Communication Training Battalion, Twentynine Palms, California to serve as the Senior Enlisted Advisor.
Sergeant Major Shaffer’s decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold star in lieu of 4th award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
