In April 1997, Staff Sergeant Bernal entered recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC, graduated in July 1997.  Staff Sergeant Bernal received orders to Infantry Training Battalion, SOI, to his follow on school at Camp Geiger, NC.  Upon completion of his school in Sept 1997, Staff Sergeant Bernal was given the MOS of 0311, Rifleman, and reported to Marine Corps Security Force Training Co. Chesapeake, VA. to continue training and receive the MOS of 8152, basic security guard.

In November 1997, he graduated from MCSFTCo. and received orders to Marine Corps Security Forces Co London, England, to be a security forces guard until July 1999.   Received orders to Kilo Company, 3d Battalion 1st Marines, Camp Pendleton, CA. assigned as a infantry fire team leader. While there, he was promoted to Corporal in Aug.2000 and deployed on a Western Pacific deployment with the 13th MEU, who were members of Operation Determined Response, when the USS Cole was targeted by terrorist and also played a part in a Humanitarian Operation in East Timor until returning back in Feb 2001.

In June 2001, Staff Sergeant Bernal checked into Marine Corps Security Forces Training Company, Chesapeake, VA. as permanent personnel to work as a Operations clerk and as a Martial Arts instructor.  September 2001 he was promoted to Sergeant.

In Nov. 2004, Staff Sergeant Bernal returned to the Fleet Marine Force in Camp Lejeune, NC and reported to 3d Battalion 8th Marines Weapons Company as Headquarter Platoon Sergeant.  Shortly upon arrival prepared to deploy to Fallujah, Iraq in Jan. 2005, he was assigned to 4th Platoon to be a Section Leader, where he was awarded the Navy/ Marine Corps Achievement medal with Combat “V” for actions displayed on April 1 2005 while under fire in combat.  Staff Sergeant Bernal returned from deployment Sept 2005 and prepared to deploy for a 2nd tour to Iraq with 3/8 to Ramadi, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2006 to August 2006.  While at Iraq, doing research from other past recruiters decided to submit a recruiter package in hopes to work back in his home city, New York.

Staff Sergeant Bernal arrived at the Basic Recruiting School in San Diego, CA. in May 2007, where he earned the MOS 8411, Recruiter and graduated June 2007.   With orders to report to RS NY was assigned to RSS Manhattan in August 2007.  Shortly after in November 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In September 2008, he was awarded rookie recruiter of the year and the leadership award and was assigned to work as a recruiter at RSS Jamaica to work as SNCOIC in Feb until Oct.  Staff Sergeant Bernal was then sent back to RSS Manhattan and worked at PCS Times Square, while waiting an extra 6 months on production for his security clearance and re enlistment package to come back approved  had finally PCS’d in Dec 2010 as a successful recruiter.

 Staff Sergeant Bernal reported with orders to 3d Intelligence Battalion as the Platoon Sergeant for Ground Sensors Platoon January 2011.  Staff Sergeant Bernal trained Ground Sensors Marines to deploy to Afghanistan and later deployed with a section in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in April 2012 until Sept. 2012 supporting 3d Battalion 8th Marines in FOB Geronimo.

 Shortly after, Staff Sergeant Bernal had orders to return to Recruiting Station New York for a second tour as a canvassing recruiter in Hicksville in March 2013.  After 3 months as a canvassing recruiter, in Aug 2013, Staff Sergeant Bernal moved to Recruiting Sub Station Flatbush to be the SNCOIC, the original recruiting sub station that he joined from in 1997.

 Staff Sergeant Bernal’s personal awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat “V”, and the Combat Action Ribbon and has a recruiting ribbon.
