Gunnery Sergeant Michael J. Velazquez was born in Brooklyn, New York in February 1980.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July 1999.  Gunnery Sergeant Velazquez graduated from Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC, on October 1, 1999.  He attended his MOS school at Camp Johnson, NC and designated as a 3043, Supply and Administration.

Upon completion of school in December 1999, he was transferred to 3rd Battalion 11th Marines, where he served Supply Clerk and Supply NCO/Chief until June 2002.  While at 3rd Battalion 11th Marines, Private Velazquez was promoted through the ranks up to Corporal in November 2002. He then received orders to Okinawa, Japan where he served as Purchasing Agent NCO until July 2003. While at Okinawa Japan, Corporal Velazquez was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in December 2003. He then received orders to Recruiting Station New York where he served as Supply Clerk and Supply Chief until August 2007. While at Recruiting Station New York, Sergeant Velazquez was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in January 2007.  He then received orders to Recruiting duty at Recruiting Station New York and served as Recruiter from December 2007 until 2009 and Substation Commander from March 2009 until January 2010.  He then received orders to 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune North Carolina.  During this time he also deployed to Afghanistan with Border Patrol Team 1 From March 2011 until December 2011 and upon his return he was later then assigned to the Division G4 Supply Inspector Chief until March 2014. While at 2nd Marine Division, Staff Sergeant Velazquez was promoted to his current rank of Gunnery Sergeant in August 2012. Gunnery Sergeant Velazquez attended Basic Supply Course and Supply Chief Course for his Military Occupation Specialty.  He has also attended the following leadership courses Corporals Course, Sergeants Course, Career Course and Advance Course. Gunnery Sergeant Velazquez has also attended the Marine Corps martial Arts Course in 2002 and is currently a Black Belt Instructor.  

Gunnery Sergeant Velazquez is currently assigned to Marine Corps Recruiting Station New York as a station commander at Recruiting Substation Brooklyn.
