Maj Wheeler enlisted in the Marine Corps in March of 1997. Upon completion of recruit training, he was assigned to Recruit Training Regiment, Parris Island, SC. In February of 1999 Maj Wheeler executed a Permanent Change of Assignment to MCAS Beaufort for duty with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 332. During his tour he deployed to Tazar, Hungry in support of Operation Noble Anvil, and a UDP to Iwakuni, Japan, Okinawa, Japan, and Thailand in support of Operation Cobra Gold 2000.
In January 2001, Maj Wheeler reported into United States Pacific Command, Camp Smith HI for duty as the Special Assistant to the Commander USPACOM for Security. During this assignment he also served on the Joint Color Guard. In April of 2003, Maj Wheeler was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program. Maj Wheeler was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from the University of South Carolina in May 2006.
Following The Basic School and Logistics Officers Course, Maj Wheeler reported to 2d MLG, CLR-27, CLB-22, where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer, and Motor Transport Officer. During his tour he deployed with the 22 MEU twice in support of Operation Enduring and once in support of Operation Unified Response in Haiti.
Maj Wheeler reported to MCRD Parris Island in May of 2010 where he served as a Series Commander Fox Company, Company Commander Golf Company, and as the Aide de Camp to the Commanding General Eastern Recruiting Region, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC.
Maj Wheeler attended Expeditionary Warfare School, Quantico, VA from 2013-2014 before reporting to Marine Aircraft Group 31 (MAG-31) in May of 2014. Maj Wheeler was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 where he served as the Company Commander for Motor Transportation, Headquarters and Service, and as Operations Officer before reporting to MAG-31 HQ to serve as the Group Logistics Officer in December 2016. During this tour Maj Wheeler deployed as an individual augment in support of SPMAGTF-AF-CR 15.1 as the Ugandan Security Cooperation Team Officer-in-Charge.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History from the University of South Carolina as well as a Masters of Military Operational Art and Science Degree from the Air Force Command and Staff College.
His personal decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, and the Good Conduct Medal with 2 bronze stars.
