NEW YORK --
Marines kicked off the evening semifinal match up Sept. 5 by presenting the colors at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Flushing, Queens, N.Y.
The color guard consisted of Cpl. Nathan Sparks, Cpl. Cesar Gilcardona, Sgt. John Neal, and was led by team NCOIC Sgt. Christopher Weekes. All members of Thursday night's color guard are permanently stationed at the 1st Marine Corps District headquarters in Garden City, N.Y.
Leathernecks stationed in the New York City and Long Island area are invited every year to participate in the U.S. tennis tournament. In addition to presenting the colors in front of hundreds of tennis fans and stars at Arthur Ashe stadium, the Marines get free exposure on national television.
