GARDEN CITY, N.Y. --
Children at the Children's Greenhouse Child Care Center in Garden City, N.Y., presented the Marines at the 1st Marine Corps District headquarters in Garden City with an American Flag Nov. 26 as a gesture of support and encouragement during these troubling times.
"We sent it as a gesture of support and encouragement during these difficult times," said Janet Walsh, director of the childcare center. "We want you to know that we sincerely appreciate the work that you do for our country and for each and every one of us."
This unique version of the American flag is made out of handprints of all the children who attend the child care center and the fingerprints of the staff who work with the children there. In all, 150 children helped create the flag that now hangs in the Marines Stewart Avenue building.
To show their gratitude, the Marines visited the childcare center at Nassau Community College Nov. 29. While at the center, the Marines spent a few minutes talking with the children and handed out small American flags and Marine Corps stickers.
