Former Commandant awarded USO Gold Medal

The United Service Organizations presented former Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Michael W. Hagee with the USO Gold Medal Award at its 45th Annual Gold Medal Dinner & Armed Forces Gala in New York City, Dec. 7.

Gen. Hagee, who was honored for an outstanding career of military service, joined the list of USO Gold Medal recipients with Commissioner of Major League Baseball Allan H. “Bud” Selig, who was also recognized that night.

The gala, which also celebrated the USO’s 65th anniversary, was not without style and entertainment.  The event was held at the Cipriani 42nd Street location in the famous Bowery Building near Grand Central Terminal. A musical performance was provided Miss USO and her troupe of entertainers. And, the Master of Ceremonies was Hollywood actor Jon Voight.

The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide morale, welfare and recreational services to our men and women in uniform. It currently operates 132 centers worldwide, including ten mobile centers located in the continental United States and overseas.
