Thirty-six Marine recruiters and their families stationed throughout the country gathered for an awards ceremony and weekend retreat, Jan. 27-29, at the Disney World Resorts’ Shades of Green hotel here.

The event was planned to reward the Marines, and their spouses, for their efforts during the Marine Corps Recruiting Command’s fall recruiting offensive.  This offensive took place between Oct. 1, 2005 and Dec. 30, 2005.

“The effort exhibited by the top performers deserves recognition,” explained Capt. Edward S. McDonough, a waivers officer at MCRC, who also coordinated the awards ceremony.

Enjoying the weekend getaway were the top performing recruiters and staff non-commissioned officers in charge (SNCOIC) from the six Marine Corps Recruiting Districts.  Each district commanding officer selected three recruiters and three SNCOICs to represent their command.

The top performing recruiter and SNCOIC from each district received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for their actions.  The remaining 24 honored Marines received Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for their efforts throughout the offensive.

“I am honored to be here today recognizing these outstanding Marines,” said Major Gen. Walter E. Gaskin, commanding general, Marine Corps Recruiting Command.  “These Marines and their families fight a tremendous battle in keeping our Marine Corps in tact.”

Although the Marine Corps is historically successful in meeting its annual recruiting goals, Marine recruiters today face a multitude of challenges.  They work long hours, spend a lot of time on the road and have to deal with the daily pressures of today’s society.  However, Marine recruiters have remained vigilant and have continued to prove that hard work, initiative and motivation will allow them to remain successful.

“I think this is a great initiative on behalf of MCRC,” explained Master Sgt. Paulo A. Moniz, a career recruiter and SNCOIC of Recruiting Station Orange County, Calif., who was accompanied by his wife Mia at the awards ceremony.  “These Marines and their families deserve the best treatment possible for the sacrifices they make on a daily basis.  I'm especially gratified that the canvassing recruiters and their families got to experience this wonderful event and got recognized for their incredible determination and outstanding results.”

In addition to recognizing the Marines, MCRC paid for each Marine to bring their spouse in recognition of their hard work.  Although not funded by the command, some Marines paid out of  pocket to bring their children.

“I brought my wife and my three sons,” said Gunnery Sgt Daniel D. Moore, a SNCOIC from Recruiting Station Columbia, S.C.  “It was an awesome experience to spend the weekend with my family and just relax and see the sights.  My children enjoyed everyday there even though they had to do some homework.  It was a great experience.”
