Sergeant Major, Recruiting Station Dallas

Sergeant Major James S. Moran was born in Nashville Tennessee and enlisted in September of 1991. He graduated from Lima Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on 20 December 1991, upon graduation, attended Marine Combat Training, Camp Geiger, N.C. and Parachute Rigger School, Naval Air Station Millington, Tennessee. 

In July 1992, Lance Corporal Moran, received orders to VMFA 251, MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina where he made multiple deployments to Okinawa, Japan and Aviano, Italy in support of the Bosnian conflict. He was promoted to Corporal; in September 1994, and deployed aboard the USS America CV66, for Operations Southern Watch and Decisive Endeavor, again in support of the Bosnian conflict.

In May 1996, Then Sergeant Moran, received orders to the Parachute Loft Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31 where he served as the NCOIC, Collateral Duty Inspector and as a Quality Assurance Representative for 12 months before receiving orders to Instructor Duty, NAS Pensacola Florida.

In June 1997, Sergeant Moran reported to MATSG 90, Naval Air Station Pensacola. After completing the Basic Instructor Course at NTTC Corey Station, Sergeant Moran was assigned as an Instructor at the Aviation Life Support Systems/ Parachute Rigger School. Sergeant Moran was selected as Non Commissioned Officer of the year for MATSG and earned his Navy/ Marine Parachutist Device. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in December 1999 and received orders to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California in October of 2000.

Sergeant Major Moran reported to Drill Instructor School in December 2000 and upon graduation, he was assigned to Mike Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion. He filled the billets of Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Series Gunnery Sergeant and Company First Sergeant. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in March of 2003, and after the completion of eleven training cycles, received orders to Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in February 2004.

In March of 2004, Gunnery Sergeant Moran reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-24 MCB Kaneohe Bay where he was the SNCOIC of the Parachute Loft and Cryogenics facilities. Gunnery Sergeant Moran deployed to Okinawa, Japan in November 2005 in support of HMLA-463. He was selected for First Sergeant in December of that same year and was ordered back to Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

In April 2006, then, First Sergeant Moran reported to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines were he served as a First Sergeant for Fox Company, completing a deployment to Barwanah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was then assigned as the Weapons Company First Sergeant, completing a second deployment to Zaidon, Iraq again in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In October of 2008, First Sergeant Moran reported to MCRD Parris Island and was assigned to Third Recruit Training Battalion. He served as the Company First Sergeant for India, Kilo and Lima companies completing five cycles and in June of 2010, he was selected as the First Sergeant for Drill Instructor School.

In July of 2011 he transferred to Support Battalion and served as the Support Battalion Sergeant Major for seven months. He was selected to his current rank in November of 2011.

In December of 2011 Sergeant Major Moran reported to Third Battalion, Second Marines on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he deployed with the 26 Marine Expeditionary Unit as the Battalion Landing Team(BLT) Sergeant Major.

In January of 2014 Sergeant Major Moran reported to Recruiting Station Dallas Texas where he is currently serving as the Recruiting Station Sergeant Major.

His personal awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy/ Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, Navy/ Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy/ Marine Parachutist device as well as various other unit and service awards.

He is married to former Ms. Angel Shrum of Hendersonville, Tennessee and they have a four month old son named Colton.
