Major Peterson was born in 1976 in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately following high school in 1994, and graduated from Recruit Training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Following the completion of the School of Infantry, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton, California where he completed one deployment as an anti-tank missile man, and one deployment as a scout sniper team leader.
Major Peterson graduated with high honors in 2001 from New Mexico State University, and was commissioned through the Officer Candidates Course. Following completion of the Basic Officer Course and Infantry Officer Course, he was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California where he commanded an anti-tank platoon and the 81mm mortar platoon. He then served as a Company Executive Officer. While in 1st LAR, Major Peterson deployed three times in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM including the initial ground assault.
In 2006 Major Peterson was assigned as the Officer Selection Officer for Recruiting Station Orange. While on recruiting duty, he completed non-resident Expeditionary Warfare School, and non-resident Marine Corps Command and Staff College.
In 2009 Major Peterson attended the Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia where he was a distinguished graduate. In December of 2009 he completed a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University. He was then assigned to the Third Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, where he served as the Officer in Charge of a Police Advisor Team, Rifle Company Commander, Weapons Company Commander, and Operations Officer in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, and WESTPAC 12-2.
Major Peterson’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device, four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (one with combat distinguishing device), the Combat Action Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, and seven sea service deployment ribbons.
He is married to the former Meredith Culbertson of Las Cruces, New Mexico. They have one daughter Sophia who is seven, and one son Harlan who is four.
His hobbies are hunting, reading, and cycling.
