Colonel Dudley R. Griggs earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Colorado College, completed Officer Candidates School and was commissioned in August of 1989. After completing The Basic School and the Basic Communications Officers Course, he reported to the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing for duty.
In August 1990, he joined Marine Air Support Squadron 3 as the Direct Air Support Center Communications Officer and deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in support of Operations Desert Shield / Desert Storm.
He transferred to the 12th Marine Corps District and served as the Officer Selection Officer and Executive Officer, Recruiting Station Salt Lake City from June 1993 to June 1996. In July 1996, Colonel Griggs reported to the Marine Corps University, where he graduated from the Command & Control Systems course in 1997.
He then transferred to the 1st Marine Division and reported for duty with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and served simultaneously as the Light Armored Vehicle Platoon Commander and Communications Platoon Commander / Battalion S-6. During July of 1998, he was transferred to the 1st Marine Regiment and served as the Communications Platoon Commander and Regimental S-6. In July of 2000, he reported to the U.S. Southern Command, J-6 Directorate, Operations Division, and served as a principal member of the Operations & Plans Group, Crisis Action Center, and Deployable Joint Task Force Augmentation Cell; deploying to both Columbia and then Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with Joint Task Force 160.
In June of 2002, LtCol Griggs transferred to the 8th Marine Corps District and assumed command of Recruiting Station, Denver, Colorado.
In July, 2005, he reported to the 1st Marine Division as the G6 Operations Officer and then deployed as the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Fwd) G-6 Operations Officer; later assuming AC/S G-6 and then Deputy G6 responsibilities throughout the conduct of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07.
He returned to Camp Pendleton and assumed command of 9th Communication Battalion in March, 2007, as it prepared and then deployed under rotational construct to support I Marine Expeditionary Force (Fwd) through the conduct of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08’.
In July, 2009, he attended Top Level School at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, as a Commandant of the Marine Corps Fellow.
Returning to the Operating Forces in July of 2010, Colonel Griggs assumed duties as the AC/S G-6 for 2d Marine Division and then deployed with 2d Marine Division (Fwd) to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of OEF-11. In May of 2012, he returned and assumed duties as the AC/S G-6 for II Marine Expeditionary Force.
