Sergeant Major Richards enlisted in the Marine Corps on 10 March 1986. He reported to MCRD San Diego for recruit training on 12 June 1986, Company C, 1st Recruit Training Battalion where he graduated as a Private First Class. Private First Class Richards then reported to Barstow, California for Supply School in July 1986.


Private First Class Richards then reported to 3d Landing Support Battalion, 3d Force Service Support Group (FSSG), Okinawa, Japan during November 1986 where he served as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for Heavy Equipment Company.Private First Class Richards then received orders to Supply Battalion, 1st FSSG, Camp Pendleton, California during November 1987 where he served as an administration clerk. He was promoted to Lance Corporal April 1988 and was promoted to Corporal June 1989. Corporal Richards was transferred to Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans, Louisiana during November 1991. While there, he served as the Awards and Fitness Report Chief for the Marine Corps' Reserves and as an I-I Staff Inspector, and was promoted to Sergeant April 1992.In June 1994, Sergeant Richards received orders to the Memphis MEPS where he served as an ASVAB Test Administrator. Sergeant Richards was selected as the NCO of the Quarter and Year in 1996. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant February 1997.


Staff Sergeant Richards received orders to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, MAG-39, 3d MAW, MCAS, Camp Pendleton during August 1998 where he served as the Administration Chief. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant September 2001.In July 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Richards requested and received orders to MCRD San Diego for duty as a Drill Instructor. He was assigned to Company E, 2d Recruit Training Battalion where he completed four cycles, three as a Drill Instructor and one as a Senior Drill Instructor. In October 2003, Gunnery Sergeant Richards assumed the duties of 2d Recruit Training Battalion Operations Chief. In January 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Richards assumed the duties of Company First Sergeant for Company G. In January 2005, he resumed his duties as Operations Chief. In April 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Richards was assigned to the Instructor Staff, Drill Instructor School, MCRD San Diego where he served as both a Squad Instructor and Curriculum Developer.


He was selected for First Sergeant and assumed the duties of Special Training Company First Sergeant. In June 2006, First Sergeant Richards received orders to 2d Radio Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC. He served as Headquarters and Service (H&S) Company First Sergeant from August 2006 to April 2007. In April 2007, First Sergeant Richards assumed duties as Company A First Sergeant and deployed in support of OIF from August 2007 to March 2008.


In April 2008 through September 2009 he again assumed duties as H&S Company First Sergeant and was the acting Sergeant Major when required. In November 2009, he was selected for Sergeant Major. In February 2010, he was assigned as the Sergeant Major for Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263, MCAS New River, NC and deployed with the 22d MEU in support of OEF from March 2011 to February 2012. In April 2012, he was assigned to his current billet of Sergeant Major, Recruiting Station Springfield, Massachusetts.


Sergeant Major Richards' personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of second award), Joint Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of fourth award).
